It’s the just been the 10th anniversary of my album ‘Atlantic Culture’ with Zazou.

How to lose millions? I came into this record with a fixed deal with the record company and publishers that netted me a million pounds advance for every album I delivered, before it even sold a single copy. Obviously, they had no intention of releasing this one so I sat in the chairman’s office and begged them to let me go, he said ‘the problem is, the music’s good, it’s not like you’re making rubbish, it’s just not what people expect from you etc’ I insisted and in the end I got my severence. Good bye income!!!

I put together the very best musicians I had encountered over the years of doing razorlight, not the faceless session dudes, not the wannabes, but people with hurt in their playing and we rehearsed this album in a warehouse in Hackney, (just as the gentrification was kicking in, welcome to the brave new world of getting shut down for noise because of a Guardian journalist calling the cops on you!) I took it as seriously as I would a Razorlight album and gave it everything.

We used to put some of the tracks on at parties and people would flip out asking what it was and we’d just lie and make up a name, uhh Inaki Jupiter, they’re really good... Cause I kind of knew people wouldn’t give it the time of day if they knew it was coming from me. Why is another question.

So yeah, I have sometimes heard people have accused me of being some kind of money-grabbing careerist artist or a sell-out. Well, this album probably cost me about 1.5million and at every step of the way I absolutely knew it would reach nobody. But, you know, I’ve only ever made the music that’s alive in me regardless of any other consideration. And I’ll always be proud of this record and I still laugh my ass off at all the ‘intelligent’ music journalists who lambasted it for having so much ‘trumpet.’ Kudos to Mark Beaumont at the NME who went against the grain at the time and can tell the difference between Miles Davis and Ornette Coleman.

Ah yeah, in the age of spelling everything out for people ‘the artificial night’ is a Helene Cixous reference.
